Black Friday quandary? Shop for winter cycle gear.

While sifting through the hordes of catalogues that arrive in my mailbox everyday, my discriminating eye paused at a flyer from my local performance bicycle shop. The brochure was packed with quality winter-clothing for the dedicated triathlete looking to maintain fitness through the off-season. All at a 20% discount!
So this shopping season, I’ll avoid the crush of the high-traffic malls and instead will wander down to my favorite local bike shop to do my part for our ailing economy. Having built out my cycle gear for warmer months, my gear box was sadly missing the warmer wind-proof gear needed to take advantage of the upcoming clear but cold days. Not knowing how to build out my wishlist, I asked my tri-coach Rob Colburn, a multiple Ironman and my trusted advisor in these matters: What critical items do I need before joining his winter cycling crew? Here’s what he said to get:
- A hat/skull cap that covers the ears and still fits under the helmet.
- A good pair of gloves
- Wind proof biking tights, socks, and neoprene booties.
- If prone to breathing problems or cold induced asthma, find some sort of face/mouth covering and/or a balaclava.
- Eye protection
- Dress in layers of upper body clothing, with the number of layers based on the temperature, and that make it easy to add or shed depending on how you feel
- The first layer needs some sort of tech material that wicks away sweat from your body.
- Middle layers an a lycra or wool, not cotton.
- On colder days, the outer layer should include a wind resistant bike or run jacket.
I found additional cold-weather cycle clothing tips here.
Hey, and for those of you out there shopping for your favorite triathlete in your life, cold-weather training gear makes a great stocking stuffer that won’t break the bank.
Happy Thanksgiving, successful shopping, and safe riding!
